Keeping track of Oregon’s wolves — Biologists with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife have been busy so far this summer keeping tabs on all the wolf activity. Earlier in the month, they collared two wolves—a six-year-old male in the Umatilla River area, and a 2-year-old female in the Wenaha pack. This week, they received a trail-cam photo of a lactating female near the Eagle Cap Wilderness area. See photos below, courtesy of ODFW:
“Boise” arrives at Busch Gardens – The lone Idaho wolf pup found by a roadside in central Idaho now has a couple of mates at his new home in Williamsburg, Virginia. Zoologists at Busch Gardens have named him “Boise,” and they’re raising him with two other pups brought in from Montana. The pups are handled regularly so they grow accustomed to human contact but will be raised primarily by a surrogate female dog. The zoo manager expects the pups will be on public display within a few weeks. See Busch Gardens press release, video and photos of Boise’s arrival last week.
Woo-hoo for Wood River! — The Idaho Mountain Express reported on last week’s successful workshop, highlighting areas of broad agreement on moving the Wood River Wolf Project forward. As the story notes, not a single wolf has been killed within in the project area since 2008, which demonstrates how effective nonlethal deterrents can be when used appropriately. Wolves have been killed just outside the project area, however, where ranchers have not taken sufficient steps to prevent conflict with livestock. This sharp contrast indicates that innovative management tools really can make a difference.

Defenders of Wildlife leads the pack when it comes to protecting wild animals and plants in their natural communities.

i have been a member for years and i joined when the first YellowStone Pack was established. I fell in love with the wolves, there tenacity, family ties, there teachings, etc.Last night on the “HISTORY CHANNEL”was a program called the mountain men…very upsetting!!!one man from alaska, one from S>C> and the other from Ore. this man talked about the terrifing wolves that follow you, terrosize you, ripe you apart..and that more should be shot, trapped, etc.what a horrifing program,it goes against everything i have ever read, and learned about my favorite animal.I do realize they are wild animals and that if they are starving they would look at humans as something to eat. as most animals would also do.Is there anything you can so to oppose this type of program..Or,God forbid,is this man right? Please get back to me.I hope you found this program so you can see what is being shown to people!!!!!Thank You Kathleen Ploss po804 georgetown,ma e-mail..kathyploss @msn.com

Finally something productive is being done for my wolves, which are my main passion! These wolf cubs, altho being raised by a dog,, if treated with love, resposible training & socialization, will make wonderful pets & the chance of them “turning” on humans is nil to non-exhistant. I raised a cub whose mother was shot & killed, the litter-mates of this pup had died from hunger & exposure but the one pup. My friends who were hunting found the lone cub, brought her to me, as I was known as the animal whisperer, they were humane & brought the little cub to me as they felt it was morally wrong to leave it to starve, & I wound up with the best “dog” I ever had up till now. My current dog is an overground double registered sheltie who has a lot of wolf tendendancies. Anyway, this wolf cub never turned & to me, was proof positive that the wolves who are raised properly can be civilized & become a positive addition to anyone’s home!

Try telling that to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana, Idaho, Alaska and all the other states that hunt them or are going to hunt them!

Wonderful wolf news!

Boise’s family may have all been slaughtered by hunters in Idaho. They are killing too many wolves in Idaho. It’s sad that Boise won’t see his family again but he has a new family now. Hopefully, Boise and the other cubs will have plenty of room to roam in their new home.

I love animals and this is a great read. However, I am kind of confused as to why Boise cannot be introduced back into the wild. Over the years I have read and studied the horrors that go on in zoos and circuses not only to the animals physically but mentally as well. They are not pets, they do not belong behind a glass wall or in a cage for all to admire. If this wolf dies in the wild it is the will of nature. I boycott circuses (especially Ringling Brothers for their cowardly and cruel acts to baby elephants) and also zoos. Again it is heartwarming to see that mankind still cares about the ecosystem and our surroundings, but after this pup matures and is back to health, it should be tagged and allowed to run….. Lets focus on boycotting the concrete jungle and massive land clearings going on across the country!
