Watch our Save Something Wild video to see just some of the wildlife and wild places you’re helping us protect.
YOU DID IT!
Your votes—once a week, every week for 12 weeks—helped us win $200,000 in funding from Members Project from American Express!
Two hundred thousand dollars will help us:
Support our on-the-ground efforts to ensure that humans and wolves can peacefully co-exist
Stop harmful drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge—the most important onshore denning habitat for America’s polar bears
Work with Native American tribes and others to expand the range of wild bison
Protect the beach habitat that sea turtles need to survive
Fund rewards to capture people who illegally kill rare lynx
Relocate prairie dogs to protected habitat and restore their important place in prairie ecosystems
Plan and advocate for panther crossings to reduce the number of cats killed on Florida’s roads
And much more!
You didn’t just vote for us… you VOTED for us! From the first week of voting through to the last, Defenders received more than 80% of the votes in the Environment & Wildlife category. More than 1,500 of you became Members of our community on the Take Part website and about 2,400 of you Liked it on Facebook!
Now THAT’s what we call being a Defender of Wildlife!
On behalf of all the wildlife and wild places we’re fighting so hard to protect—on the ground, in the courts, and in Washington, D.C.—thank you. Two hundred thousand times, THANK YOU!
Thanks to everyone who has been voting for Defenders of Wildlife each week to help us try to win $200,000 in funding from Members Project from American Express. You can vote once a week through February 20, 2011 and this week you’re voting for Florida panthers!
At last count, just an estimated 100 to 160 Florida panthers are left in the world.
Tragically, too many of these rare and beautiful cats are dying as victims of road kill (16 killed in 2010!) and suffering due to the loss of habitat.
Help us secure the funds we need to save Florida panthers. Please vote today!
Did You Know…? Panthers are habitat generalists, meaning that they use a variety of habitat types, including forests, prairies and swamps.
Two hundred thousand dollars can do a lot of good for panthers and other wildlife.
It can help us plan and advocate for panther crossings to reduce the number of cats killed on Florida’s roads. It can help us protect panther habitat, such as Big Cypress National Preserve, expanding the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, and working with landowners for preservation of habitat on private lands. And it can help us reduce conflicts between panthers and humans through education and on-the-ground efforts.

A Swedish company has found a new use for some of Stockholm’s hottest bods — that is, heating big buildings, of course!
The hustle and bustle of a quarter-million passengers through this European city’s rail hub, Central Station, generates a lot of juice – enough electricity to lower energy costs at a nearby 13-story building by up to 25 percent, according to a BBC News report.
Who’d have guessed that body heat could be such a potent source of renewable (dare I say clean) energy? Apparently, the idea’s been around for a while. According to Time, the Mall of America in Minnesota also captures body heat to help keep shoppers toasty warm in winter.
But this story offers a fresh reminder that smart, renewable energy possibilities are all around us… from solar panels covering parking lots to that bloke brushing by on your morning commute.
The more creative solutions we use, such as capturing body heat, the less pressure energy development will place on wildlife like threatened desert tortoises and their habitat on public lands.

Black-tailed prairie dogs once numbered in the hundreds of millions. Tragically, their numbers have decreased by more than 95%.
Help us secure the funds we need to save prairie dogs. Please vote today!
Did You Know…? Unlike the other species of prairie dogs found world-wide, the black tailed prairie dog does not hibernate in the winter and can often be seen above ground level during mid-winter.
Two hundred thousand dollars can do a lot of good for prairie dogs and other wildlife.
It can help us stop the use of deadly poisons like Rozol and Kaput-D, which can lead to painful and inhumane deaths of prairie dogs and other wildlife. It can help relocate prairie dogs to protected habitat and restore their important place in prairie ecosystems. And it can help us protect other imperiled wildlife, such as the endangered black-footed ferrets, that depend on prairie dogs to survive.

Vote for Defenders of Wildlife to win $200,000 and help save sea turtles!
Thanks to everyone who has been voting for Defenders of Wildlife each week to help us try to win $200,000 in funding from Members Project from American Express. You can vote once a week through February 20, 2011 and this week you’re voting for sea turtles!
The seven species of sea turtles now on the earth are some of the planet’s most ancient creatures. Yet, each of these ancient mariners is threatened with extinction… unless we help!
Help us secure the funds we need to save sea turtles. Please vote today!
Did You Know…? Green sea turtles can stay under water for as long as five hours even though the length of a feeding dive is usually five minutes or less. Their heart rate slows to conserve oxygen: nine minutes may elapse between heartbeats.
Two hundred thousand dollars can do a lot of good for sea turtles and other wildlife.
It can help us prevent deadly oil spills that can poison and drown sea turtles. It can help reduce unsafe fishing practices that can inadvertently capture, wound or kill these amazing creatures. And it can help us protect the beach habitat that sea turtles need to survive.

Vote for Defenders of Wildlife to win $200,000 and help save lynx!
Thanks to everyone who has been voting for Defenders of Wildlife each week to help us try to win $200,000 in funding from Members Project from American Express. You can vote once a week through February 20, 2011 and this week you’re voting for lynx!
Lynx need a very specific kind of habitat to survive—habitat that is threatened by climate change and reckless development schemes.
Significant populations of lynx are thought to exist only in Montana and Washington. But, with the help of caring people like you, we can work to restore lynx in other parts of the country where they’ve historically lived.
Did You Know…? Lynx have excellent eyesight: they can spot a mouse at 250 feet! Also, the black tufts of hair at the tops of their ears serve to enhance their already phenomenal hearing.
Two hundred thousand dollars can do a lot of good for lynx and other wildlife.
It can help us stop harmful development that would compromise lynx habitat. It can fund rewards to capture people who illegally kill these rare forest felines. And it can help us advocate for policies to address climate change that is threatening the very survival of these reclusive cats.
